چکیده

The surface hydrophobicity of Klehsiella aerogenes is influenced by the presence of capsular (K) and lipopolysaccharide (0) antigens. Loss of both K and 0 antigens ( K 0 ) , but not the K antigen alone (K-O+), increased surface hydrophobicity and susceptibility to phagocytosis. Unheated serum (i.e., containing complement) increased the surface hydrophobicity and phagocytosis of the K-O+ and K 0 strains, but not of the K+O+ encapsulated parent strain. Despite the altered susceptibility to phagocytosis caused by the presence or absence of the K and 0 antigens, their loss did not influence sensitivity to a range of hydrophilic, hydrophobic or cationic antimicrobial agents.

Novel R-plasmid-mediated beta-lactamase from Klebsiella aerogenes.

A novel beta-lactamase with a broad spectrum of activity against penicillins and cephalosporins has been detected in a strain of Klebsiella aerogenes. Its synthesis is mediated by an R-plasmid of molecular weight 64 x 10(6).

Five-year survey of changing patterns of susceptibility of bacterial uropathogens to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and other antimicrobial agents.

We analyzed the antibiotic susceptibility of 5,348 urinary isolates of Escherichia coli, "Klebsiella aerogenes," and Proteus mirabilis grown in three laboratories from 1980 to 1985. A continuous rise in resistance to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was observed; 63% of the strains from inpatients in 1984 and 51% of those from outpatients in 1985 were resistant to this drug. Isolates from outpatie...

An outbreak of yolk sac infection and dead-in-shell mortality in common canary (Serinus canaria) caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae

Yolk sac infection (YSI) and dead-in-shell mortality caused by Enterobacteriaceae in birds are not a rare phenomenon, however there are only a few reports indicating the association between these conditions and Klebsiella spp. among canary chicks (Serinus canaria). There have been reports of high mortality among 1-3 day old canary chicks in an indoor flock of canaries. In order to study the cau...

Prevalence of Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases Enzymes in Enterobacter Aerogenes Isolated from Urinary Tract Infections in Shahrekord City

Introduction: Enterobacteriaceae produce the Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases which is considered as an important resistant mechanism of beta-lactam antibiotics. The resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics is the main problem in the bacterial infections therapy. The prevalence of these enzymes changes in different geographical areas and with time. The present study aims to explore the frequency ...

Occurrence of efflux mechanism and cephalosporinase variant in a population of Enterobacter aerogenes and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases.

We investigated the occurrence of multidrug resistance in 44 Enterobacter aerogenes and Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates. Efflux was involved in resistance in E. aerogenes isolates more frequently than in K. pneumoniae isolates (100 versus 38% of isolates) and was associated with the expression of phenylalanine arginine beta-naphthylamide-susceptible active efflux. AcrA-TolC overproducti...
